Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Surface and near-surface defect detection for ferromagnetic components

Trusted Detection for Ferromagnetic Materials

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is one of the most reliable and widely used non-destructive testing methods for detecting surface-breaking and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel, low-alloy steel, and iron. The principle is straightforward yet highly effective: a magnetic field is induced in the test component, and finely milled ferromagnetic particles are applied to the surface. Where a crack, lap, seam, or other discontinuity interrupts the magnetic flux flow, the particles accumulate at the leakage field, forming a visible indication that maps the defect location, length, and orientation.

At Oil and Gas Plant Engineer Consultants, our certified MT technicians perform magnetic particle inspections across refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, and fabrication workshops throughout South Africa. Whether you require pre-service weld acceptance testing during construction or in-service crack detection during a turnaround shutdown, our team delivers accurate, code-compliant results with rapid turnaround times.

MT is particularly valued in the oil and gas industry for its ability to inspect large weld lengths quickly and economically. It excels at detecting fatigue cracks, hydrogen-induced cracking, stress corrosion cracking, and grinding cracks in pressure-containing components — defect types that are critical to structural integrity and operational safety. Combined with its minimal surface preparation requirements and portability, MT remains indispensable for field and shop inspections alike.

MT Magnetisation Techniques

Yoke Method

The electromagnetic yoke is the most widely used portable MT device for field inspections. It generates a localised magnetic field between its two poles, making it ideal for on-site weld inspection on pressure vessels, piping, and structural steel. The yoke is lightweight, requires no direct electrical contact with the test surface, and eliminates the risk of arc strikes — making it the preferred method for inspecting in-service plant equipment and newly fabricated components alike.

Prods Method

Prods deliver direct current flow through the test piece via two hand-held contact points, creating a circular magnetic field around each prod. This technique is particularly effective for inspecting large, flat surfaces and heavy-wall components where the yoke method may not achieve sufficient field strength. Prods excel at detecting longitudinal defects in thick-section welds and castings, offering deep magnetisation penetration for subsurface flaw detection.

Coil & Bench Testing

Bench-mounted MT units equipped with head-stocks, coils, and central conductors provide controlled longitudinal and circular magnetisation in a laboratory or workshop setting. This method is ideally suited for batch testing of smaller components such as bolts, studs, flanges, and machined parts. The controlled environment allows the use of wet fluorescent particles under UV-A illumination, delivering the highest sensitivity for detecting fine surface discontinuities.

Critical MT Applications

Magnetic particle testing is essential across every stage of the asset lifecycle — from new construction acceptance to in-service integrity verification and fitness-for-service assessments.

Pressure Vessel Welds

Surface crack detection on longitudinal and circumferential seam welds, nozzle welds, and attachment welds per ASME VIII Division 1 and Division 2 requirements. MT is routinely specified for final acceptance of pressure boundary welds.

Structural Steel Joints

Inspection of full-penetration and partial-penetration welds in structural connections, column splices, and moment frames. Essential for steel construction projects governed by AWS D1.1 and SANS 2001-CS1.

Pipeline Girth Welds

MT examination of pipeline tie-in welds, branch connections, and repair welds per API 1104 and ASME B31.3. Yoke-based MT is widely used for above-ground pipeline construction where rapid, high-volume weld acceptance is required.

Lifting Equipment

Fatigue crack detection on crane hooks, shackles, lifting lugs, and spreader beams. Periodic MT inspection of lifting gear is mandated by SANS 1594 and OHS Act regulations to prevent catastrophic failure during lifting operations.

Forgings & Castings

Detection of surface laps, seams, shrinkage cracks, and hot tears in forged and cast components. Bench MT with wet fluorescent particles under UV-A light provides the highest sensitivity for quality acceptance of valve bodies, flanges, and pump casings.

Why Choose MT Over Other Surface Methods?

When it comes to surface inspection of ferromagnetic materials, magnetic particle testing offers distinct advantages over liquid penetrant testing (PT) and visual inspection. While PT can detect surface-breaking flaws on any non-porous material, MT goes further by also revealing shallow subsurface discontinuities — defects that lie just beneath the surface and would be invisible to penetrant methods. This makes MT the superior choice for detecting inclusions, cold shuts, and hydrogen cracks that initiate below the surface.

MT is also significantly faster than PT. There is no dwell time required for penetrant to seep into flaws, no developer application wait, and no multi-stage cleaning process. A skilled MT technician using a yoke can inspect metres of weld per hour with immediate visual results. This speed advantage translates directly into reduced inspection costs and shorter shutdown durations — critical factors during plant turnarounds where every hour of downtime carries substantial financial impact.

Additionally, MT is less sensitive to surface condition than PT. Components with slightly rough surfaces, light mill scale, or thin paint coatings can still be effectively inspected using MT, whereas PT demands thoroughly cleaned and degreased surfaces. For in-service inspections in demanding industrial environments, this practical advantage makes MT the go-to method for ferromagnetic components across the oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation sectors in South Africa.
